I’ve always loved the little airline safety cards that you find tucked in the seat in front of you on large passenger aircraft. Sure, it’s nice to be prepared in the event of a water landing, but whats really interesting, is that they have to communicate complex ideas to many cultures with the simplest imagery possible. They are often stylistically destitute, rendered in as few colors as possible - so it’s not the art that attracts me. When I began learning to draw, I started with airline safety cards. I wanted to say as much as I can with as few strokes as possible. This approach has stayed with me through both my graphic design and web dev education.
I used to hate cats. My girlfriend wanted a cat badly, and I forbid it. As a compromise, she brought home a kitten while I was at work. The first night he curled up on my beer belly and fell asleep, and it all went downhill from there. Surely we must have another kitten to keep the first company. Then the roommate needed his own kitten. That was 3 years ago, and since then they’ve burrowed into the deepest recesses of my little black heart. There they’ve made a nest of discarded newspaper, string, and twigs.
I learned the basics of photography at EDCC, and it really stuck with me. My favorite setup is a Nikon with a 80mm fixed lense. I love shooting portraits more than anything else. I’m an introvert by nature, and having the camera between me and the subject makes me feel safe, and that feeling of safety helps me to better connect with the people around me. I’ve also got a taste for polaroids. I really like the instant gratification, and having a material object that can be gifted to people that you’re making the memories with.
