Bill Is Back & Certified...!

Renowned IT Generalist Ready to Lend Hand

"I needed to refresh my web skills. I looked for the best local program and that clearly was Edmonds Community College," said Bill Seling, somewhat of a celebrity in local IT circles.

Bill has been doing Information Technology (IT) work for more than 30 years and he's eager to keep going, taking advantage of his new CIS Associate of Technical Arts degree from EdCC.

"The hardest part for me is limiting my resume to one page," Bill said in a recent phone interview, adding that in the last ten years he has successfully filled roles as Senior Business Analyst, Software Tester, Scrum Master, Technical Writer, and even did some outside consulting.

"Every company I've been at has found several things I could help them with that were not on the job description." Bill went on to describe how a software development shop at one place sent their entire development group to Scrum training and then were dismayed when it turned out to be something less than they expected. "I knew what Scrum was, and I knew what they wanted to do, and I knew they didn't have an exact match. The day they held their first standup meeting, it was a disaster. I picked up the ball and designed a project to teach them how to do Scrum."

Interests Page

Well, as you might expect, several of my personal interests have been curtailed while winding my way through the EdCC Web Application Developer ATA program. But I have other interests too. Work is an important part of life, and knowing what you enjoy about work is important. I cover a few here...

Bill Seling's Interests

Work Interests

Here are some of my work-related interests...

  • Friendly, professional workplaces with self-motivated employees
  • A diverse workplace. EdCC has a great diversity(staff and student body) and I'd like to keep that going at my next place of employment
  • Like a high level of entrepreneurship in a company. That fuels my creativity as well as others
  • Enjoy companies that promote from within and encourage employee development and cross-training
  • Enjoy companies who manage by MBB and MBW (a blend of a new and old manangment styles) and stress customer relationships

Project Interests

Here are a few of my project-related interests...

  • Project success! Do not care for, and have not experienced project failure
  • Documentation. Weird to some, but project documentation can help with future projects as well as the current project; if you can't write it down, you probably can't do it (ask me more about this)
  • High-performing teams: Project teams come in all shapes and sizes, but once in a while I land on a high-performong team and the amount of work, as well as the quality of the work, can be amazing. A good team is usually more than the sum of its part
  • Great project managers: I've had the opportunity to work for a lot of project managers and a handful have been exceptional. I have lead many tactical projects and freely appropriate successful strategies for my own projects
  • Project start-ups and wrap-ups: The project starts are exciting and filled with unknowns, but still exciting. The project wrap-ups are a time to reflect on what went well (and not so well) and celebrate the project and hopefully the positive results from the project

Personal Interests

Some of my personal interests include...

  • Nearly all things relating to web technologies
  • Reading, both fiction and nonfiction
  • Writing, both fiction and nonfiction
  • Trying to learn piano and guitar simultaneously
  • Road trips (in my convertible) to E. Washington, the Oregon Coast, and more
  • Hanging with my two grandsons
