Database Theory

This course was designed to recognize data as a business resource. Database models are discussed from both a programmer's and a user's viewpoint. Roles of database designer and administrator will be examined.

This course helped me to understand how databases worked. I have used databases over the years but had never built one. This course was an eye opening experience for me as I learned about relational databases, how tables related to each other, one to one, one to many and many to many relationships, and various theories behind it all. Building tables, understanding models, and the roles of designers was very informative.

The final project for the quarter was the Database Requirements Specification. There were two main parts to this document:

• The Project Overview which included Background Information about the business scenario and an analysis of various Project Requirements, a formal Purpose and Scope Statement, Business Rules, Assumptions, and Issues.



• The Technical Design section which included a conceptual model as well as a normalized Logical Data Model diagram (ERD), with complete metadata of attribute names/definitions, valid domain values/constraints, and referential integrity constraints (ERD rules).
